A Luminous Christmas

With this special Christmas episode, it’s time to give credit to our indispensable engineer and producer, Serge Ossorguine. The idea for a Luminous Christmas episode is typical of his creative thinking.

An Emmy-winning sound designer, engineer, and all-around creative person, Serge conceived the whole idea for this podcast in the first place. He and I recorded the signature intro music together — me playing harmonics on my vintage fretless Rickenbacker bass, him coming up with the chordal background. The whole project is a collaborative effort between myself and Serge.

As I suggested above, it was Serge, too, who came up with the idea of writing our 45 previous guests, asking them to name one or two selections of music that evoke “the sacred” for them during this season. Given the wide diversity of our conversation partners here—from different backgrounds, believers and non-, with often different entry-points into “the sacred,” —it’s no surprise that we have a lovely diversity of musical selections. That said, a large number come from the 20th century, many from American composers. But Bach and the baroque are there too, as is the Gospel tradition. Serge and I talk you through the compositions and the people who suggested them. Enjoy this little holiday offering from us at Luminous.
