George Kordis: Art in Church and Secular Culture

On the evening of June 20, 2024, George Kordis and I sat down for a conversation in the Georges Florovsky Library of St. Vladimir’s Seminary. Our audience consisted of the nearly 30 students who had come for the workshop of his Writing the Light school of iconography, as well as a few friends of our Institute of Sacred Arts. Over the course of our friendship and our professional association George and I have been kicking around these themes for a long time. I learn something—many things—every time we talk. It was a particular joy to bring this conversation before an audience - first in-person, and now for your enjoyment. (My longtime engineer/producer Serge Ossorguine was on hand to record this especially for Luminous.)

As I never tire of saying, George is one of the world’s most renowned living iconographers. The Institute’s association with him and his school is a great joy and enrichment for us.
